‘Cuckoo Boat sail’

Some of the barges that navigated the canal around Staveley near Chesterfield had sails. These boats look odd compared to the usual boats in the area. These ancestors of people living in Staveley today were warriors of the waters who often used these ‘Cuckoo’ boats to sail out onto the River Trent and the sea. The sculpture hopes to capture this bold outlook and sail forwards into a strong image for Staveley today. This is a sketch of the sculpture but there will also be a trail made by school children embedded in the floor of the new marketplace.
